I am pleased to welcome you to the latest issue of Momentum. In its pages you will read about our commitment to embedding entrepreneurship into the student, faculty and alumni experience at Mohawk College.
We know many of our students will pursue an entrepreneurial path at some point in their lives. Throughout my career in business, public service and academia, I have been inspired by my father. He was a serial entrepreneur and a great example of resiliency.
I’m also inspired by so much of what is featured in this edition, including Mohawk’s support of LiONS LAIR participants, our student entrepreneurs setting up successful drone videography and photography businesses while still immersed in their studies, the impressive progress of our Centre for Entrepreneurship and the achievements of our alumni who maintain strong connections to Mohawk.
We know that along with our focus on work-integrated learning, providing a grounding in what it takes to launch and operate a business is crucial to educating our students.
And this perfectly ties into two aspirations in our
2022-2025 strategic plan: to enable Future Ready education, research, programs, services and experiences for students, employees and our community; and to lead in workforce development.
Our new strategic plan meets our short-term needs for pandemic recovery as a college and a community, and sets an innovative course for our future.
We consulted more than 1,000 college stakeholders to come up with a future direction that will carry on Mohawk’s longstanding progress in sustainability, access to education, workforce development and advancing Truth and Reconciliation.
This plan is borne of a time of uncertainty and upheaval but that has provided an opportunity. If we’ve learned anything over the last two years, it’s that we need to be able to adapt to change.
Entrepreneurs embody that each day.
Regards,
Ron J. McKerlie
